Calculation of adjusted respiratory metrics

The respiration measured by the Hexoskin shirt is done using two RIP bands. These RIP bands measure the expansion and contraction of the chest and abdomen and return bits or "arbitrary values" that are proportional to respiratory movements. The contribution of the bands to the calculation of respiration is also weighted 75% chest band, and 25% abdominal band.

Raw respiration is therefore measured as follows:

respiration (raw) = total weighted band movement (in arbitrary units) x 13.28 ml/unit

 

The 13.28 is a conversion factor used in our respiratory model. It is important to note that calibration of respiratory metrics can be done with the help of a spirometer. This makes it possible to find the most representative conversion factor for the user to get the most accurate respiration metrics. 

 

"Adjusted" respiratory metrics

After synchronizing the data, the complete respiratory metrics will be available. This includes the "adjusted" respiratory metrics where a second conversion factor is used from the user's profile. This second adjustment factor takes into account the subject's weight to give a more representative breathing value. This is represented in the following formula:

respiratory metrics (adjusted) = raw respiration metric * weight (in kg) / 65
